Two-step verification

Protect your account with an authenticator app and 10 recovery codes. Setup, sign-in, lockouts and lost devices.

Two-step verification asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app each time you sign in, so a stolen password alone can't open your account. It applies to every sign-in method, including Google and Microsoft.

Before you start

  • An authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or 1Password.
  • Somewhere safe to keep 10 recovery codes (a password manager is ideal).

Steps

  1. 1

    Open Security

Go to Settings → Security and find Two-step verification.

  2. 2

    Scan the code

Turn it on and scan the QR code with your authenticator app (or type the key it shows).

  3. 3

    Confirm a code

Enter the 6-digit code your app shows to prove it's set up.

  4. 4

    Save your recovery codes

You get 10 one-time recovery codes. Store them safely: each one gets you in once if you lose your phone.

You're done when

Settings → Security shows two-step verification as on. Turning it on signs out sessions that were started before it, so other devices will need the code next time.

How it behaves

  • Five wrong codes in a row lock two-step sign-in for five minutes.
  • The secret behind your codes is stored encrypted.
  • Each recovery code works once.

If something goes wrong

My codes are always rejected

Your phone's clock is probably off. Turn on automatic date and time, then try a fresh code.

I lost my phone

Sign in with one of your recovery codes, then set two-step verification up again on the new phone.
